SUMMARY:Cashore Marionettes
DESCRIPTION:  \nORANGE CITY – The Cashore Marionettes are not just for kids! Joseph Cashore has received national awards for creating puppet shows for all ages\, from children to adults. He will be presenting a show in Orange City Tuesday\, April 8 at 7:00 p.m. at Northwestern College’s Christ Chapel. Sponsor is the Orange City Arts Council. \n  \nCashore remembers seeing his first marionette at age 10 or 11; it was hanging from the ceiling of a gift shop. He stood and imagined the possibilities\, then worked up the courage to ask the saleswoman if he could try moving the marionette. She said ‘no.’ \n  \n \nCashore Marionettes: elephant \n\nThat didn’t stop Cashore. He eventually created a puppet that would convincingly “play” a violin solo – Ralph Vaughn Williams’ “The Lark Ascending.” He worked long and hard to solve the technical problems. As a result\, “the quality of manipulation is unparalleled\, and the effect upon the audience is powerful\,” said The Center of Contemporary Arts in St. Louis. \n  \nHis awards include a Pew Fellowship for Performance Art for artistic accomplishment and a Henson Foundation Grant which encourages puppetry to adult audiences. He received the highest honor possible for an American puppeteer\, a UNIMA Citation of Excellence…  “awarded to shows that touch their audiences deeply; that totally engage\, enchant and enthrall.” Joe and Wilma Cashore have toured across Europe and North America\, including the Kennedy Center\, and received accolades everywhere. \n  \n \nCashore Marionettes: mother & baby \n\nThe Toronto Sun said: “The range of movement truly has to be seen to be believed\, and even that might be pushing it!” \n  \nAccording to Baylin Artists\, Cashore Marionettes are “unmatched in artistry\, grace and refinement of movement. They redefine the art of puppetry.” \n  \nCashore has created a show that celebrates everyday life with humor and feeling\, set to music by composers including Beethoven\, Vivaldi\, Strauss and Copland. It’s a theatrical piece which uses marionettes to evoke strong emotion… so parents of young children are asked to take that into consideration. \n  \nGeneral admission tickets are $10 adults\, $7 students\, and free for children ages 5 and under. Tickets are available at Orange City Arts Council\, Dove Christian Bookstore\, Northwestern College theatre and music departments\, and at the door. \n  \n \nMarionettes for all agesThey’re not just for kids! Cashore Marionettes\, founded by Joseph Cashore\, has received national awards for creating shows that appeal to all ages. The Toronto Sun said\, “Each creation is a slice of life\, awe-inspiring in the minutest detail.” Tickets for the April 8 Orange City show are available at OC Arts Council\, Dove Bookstore and Northwestern theatre and music departments. \n\nThe show is the final in the 2013-’14 Beyond Onstage series\, sponsored by the Orange City Arts Council\, with support from the Iowa Arts Council\, a division of the Iowa Department of Cultural Affairs\, and the National Endowment for the Arts. \n  \nFor information\, phone 712-707-4885 or email ocarts@orangecityiowa.com. \nCheck out Cashore Marionettes here.  \n \nLife in Motion from Joe Cashore on Vimeo. \nLinks: http://cashoremarionettes.com/ \n \n

SUMMARY:Baladino: World music from Israel
DESCRIPTION:SCHEDULE BELOW… SCROLL DOWN! \nORANGE CITY – The acclaimed Israeli ensemble\, Baladino\, will perform in Orange City and surrounding towns March 24-28. \n  \nIt’s part of a five-week tour\, sponsored by Arts Midwest and the Orange City Arts Council. Baladino’s residency will culminate in a public performance on Friday\, March 28 at 7:30pm at the Northwestern College Chapel in Orange City. \n  \nBaladino gathers its music from traditional melodies\, carried to Israel by the Jewish people who were expelled from Spain and Portugal in 1492. The Jews lived in Eastern Europe\, Africa and the Middle East – everywhere from Yemen\, Iraq and Morocco to Hungary\, Germany\, Turkey and Greece. So Israel is a melting pot\, with “a collision of cultures\,” said Yonnie Dror of Baladino. \n  \nSo their music is eclectic too. \n  \nThe members of Baladino\, from Tel Aviv\, begin with old melodies – some 500 years old – then add jazz\, rock and classical influences. They perform with both ancient and new instruments: soprano saxophone\, flute\, percussion\, violin\, mandolin\, vocals\, duduk\, ney\, ram’s horn and more. The duduk is the great grandfather of the oboe and bassoon\, and sounds like a weeping man\, said Dror. These days\, it’s used in Hollywood in dramatic scenes from ancient times: in movies like Gladiator\, Blood Diamond and The Lion\, the Witch & the Wardrobe. \n  \nThe ram’s horn\, or shofar\, was used in the battle of Jericho\, and is also used as a climax of prayer. The Jewish people believe that the sound of the shofar “opens up the gates of heaven\, so God listens to the prayers\,” said Dror. \n  \nDror\, leader of the ensemble\, plays 30 wind instruments. Yael Badash of Baladino has received awards for her vocals and her work in Ladino music. Baladino was honored last fall with invitations to perform at the Chicago and Madison world music festivals. \n  \nGeneral admission tickets for the public concert on Friday\, March 28 at 7:30pm at Northwestern’s Christ Chapel may be purchased at Dove Bookstore and at the door\, at $10 adults and $7 students. Children age five and under are free. \n  \nBaladino will also do school programs\, workshops and coffee house shows.  On Mon.\, March 24\, Baladino will perform at Fruited Plain Cafe in Sioux Center. On Wed.\, March 26\, Baladino will perform at Old Factory Coffee Shop in Orange City. Both shows will begin at 7:30pm\, with a $2 cover charge. \n  \nThrough the Orange City Arts Council\, Orange City was selected as the one city in Iowa to host the 2013-’15 Arts Midwest World Fest. SUMMARY:OrangeRind Doc Film Workshops
DESCRIPTION:Documentary film workshops planned for the fall in Orange City and Sioux Center \n  \nORANGE CITY –  Filmmaking is best learned by doing\, said Mark Volkers. \nThis award-winning filmmaker is teaching a series of documentary film workshops in Orange City and Sioux Center Sept. 7\, Oct. 17 and Nov. 7. \nWorkshop participants will explore the ingredients that go into successful documentary filmmaking. “How do we edit?” “What’s the best way to shoot an interview?” “What’s ethical when filming people?” “How much footage do I need?” “How do you create a story when doing a documentary?” \nStudents and Volkers will also work together on editing. “Unlike narrative (Hollywood) films\, the real storytelling for documentary takes place when you sit down to edit\,” said Volkers\, who teaches digital media production at Dordt. \n“Like any filmmaking\, documentary is both an art and a science\,” he said. “The science is beginning to understand the basics of composition\, the use of space\, the power of music and sound\, font choice\, color\, camera angle\, pacing and more. The art is putting all those ingredients together to create something that stirs people.” \nA well-done documentary\, like any good art\, causes people to question things they thought they knew\, said Volkers. “It’s entertaining\, and maybe – just maybe – begins the process of change.” \nWorkshops will be held Sat.\, Sept. 7 from 9 to noon at Old Factory Coffee Shop\, Orange City; Thurs.\, Oct. 17 from 7 to 10pm at Fruited Plain in Sioux Center; and Thurs.\, Nov. 7 at 7pm at Vogel Community Room\, DeWitt Learning Commons\, Northwestern College. Students will create short four to eight-minute documentaries. Volkers will be available to answer questions and help throughout the experience\, culminating in the public viewing of the group’s work and judges’ prizes to Best of Show ($250) and Honorable Mention ($100). \nSponsors of the OrangeRind documentary film workshops are Orange City Arts Council\, Sioux Center Rec & Arts Council and Northwestern College. Awards sponsor is OC Basketball Productions\, LLC: the primary production company of the film\, Winning Favor. \nFee for the three-part workshop is $40 for adults and $25 for students\, in advance. After Sept. 3\, the fee is $50 and $35. Register at Northwestern’s Student Development Office\, Orange City Arts Council or Mark Volkers’ office at Dordt College. \nBeginners are welcome. No special camera gear is needed; HiDef is preferred\, but not necessary. Free editing software is available. Windows Movie Maker\, iMovie\, Final Cut Pro and Adobe Premier are all possibilities. \nVolkers\, of Orange City\, most recently produced The Fourth World\, which has won multiple awards on several continents. The Fourth World will be shown free at the Northwestern College Green at 8:30pm Thurs.\, Aug. 29. SUMMARY:Orange Rind Film Festival 2013
DESCRIPTION:  \nAward-winning film\, The Fourth World\, to be shown \n  \nORANGE CITY – The award-winning film\, The Fourth World\, produced by Mark Volkers\, will be shown on the Northwestern College Green Thursday\, Aug. 29 at 8:30pm. \nVolkers\, with assistance by Dordt College students\, shot the film over a three-year period\, mostly in the Philippines\, Guatemala and Kenya. \n \nAward-winning film screening and documentary film workshops scheduledThe award-winning film\, The Fourth World\, produced by Mark Volkers\, pictured on left\, will be shown at the Northwestern College Green on Thursday\, August 29 at 8:30pm. The free screening\, part of the 2013 OrangeRind Film Festival\, is sponsored by Orange City Arts Council\, Sioux Center Rec & Arts Council and Northwestern College. This fall – Sept. 7\, Oct. 17 and Nov. 7 – a series of three documentary film workshops will be taught by Volkers in Orange City and Sioux Center. Register by Sept. 3 for the reduced fee: $40 adults\, $25 students. \n\n“We wanted to tell the story of a billion people—one in six of us—who live in a slum\,” said Volkers. “But it’s impossible to wrap our minds around a number like that. So to help us deal with the macro-picture of global poverty\, we tell micro-stories—stories of individuals who are part of that one billion.” \nIn Manila\, Philippines\, the crew spent a week with a family that lives under a bridge and digs in garbage. They focused on the 15-year-old daughter\, Jovelyn. \nIn Guatemala City\, Volkers and his assistants spent a week with two women. One\, Salma\, was sold into the sex trade at age eight by her mother. The other\, Tanya\, was shot in the spinal cord a decade ago. She survives by begging – from her wheelchair – on a busy street corner. \n \nFelix \n\nIn Nairobi\, Kenya\, the crew concentrated on 16-year-old Felix\, who sells ears of corn to help him stay in school. He lives in the Mathari Valley\, one of the largest slums in Africa\, and is from the Luo ethnic group. President Obama is also a Luo. \n“These people\, caught up in this massive migration from countryside to city\, tell their own stories\,” said Volkers. “They are engaging\, wonderful people who are caught up in some pretty dire circumstances. Through their stories\, we get the big story. \n“Is the story depressing? Not really\,” said Volkers. “Is it a wake-up call? Absolutely. Will you be surprised by what you see? Absolutely.” \nVolkers\, of Orange City\, teaches digital media production at Dordt\, but served as a missionary in an African village for seven years and has also been a photojournalist and documentary filmmaker for Christian Reformed World Missions and other organizations\, winning numerous national and international awards. The Fourth World has won over 30 awards\, including the Award of Merit at the Lucerne International Film Festival\, the Best Documentary Feature at the Third World Indie Film Fest\, and Telly Awards in Cinematography and Documentary. \n \nJovelyn \n\nThe Fourth World is currently showing on television in Ireland\, Turkey\, Greece\, other European countries\, and across the Middle East. It’s for sale via iTunes\, Amazon and Hulu. Volkers and company are working on deals in Australia and New Zealand. “We keep pushing to get the story told in new markets. The fourth world is a hidden world and we want to expose it for what it is\,” he said. \nThe free film showing is the 2013 version of the OrangeRind Film Festival\, which began three years ago by the Orange City Arts Council and Vaughn Donahue.
