DESCRIPTION:See photos of the MOC-Floyd Valley residency with Flying Pans Steel Band at facebook.com/ocArts  !!!! \n  \nMAURICE/ ORANGE CITY – The Flying Pans Steel Band from Central College will perform at Maurice Reformed Church Sunday\, March 10 at 7:00 pm. A workshop will be held for the public from 5:30 to 6:30\, prior to the concert. \n  \nThe events are sponsored by the Orange City Arts Council\, in conjunction with Maurice Reformed Church. \n  \nThe Flying Pans Steel Band\, from Pella\, was founded and is directed by Stanley E. Dahl of the Central College music department. The steel pan drums\, which originated in Trinidad and Tobago\, will be played by the 28 band members – music majors and non-music majors\, most of whom hadn’t played steel pans before coming to Central. \n  \nFlying Pans has traveled extensively throughout the Midwest\, presenting concerts\, workshops and clinics. They have performed for the Iowa Days of Percussion\, Iowa Music Educators\, Iowa Bandmasters Association\, International Association of Pan\, Percussive Arts Society International Convention and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. \n  \nThey have worked with Chris Wabich\, Liam Teague + Robert Chappell\, Ken “Professor” Philmore and Andy Narell. \n  \nThe Flying Pans perform diverse styles\, from traditional calypso\, soca and reggae to Latin\, disco\, techno\, and rock and roll to hymns. \n \nPeople of all ages are welcome to come early for the workshop\, 5:30-6:30 pm\, for hands-on experience with the steel pans. The concert begins at 7 pm. The exhibit\, Comedy of Errors\, is sponsored by the Orange City Arts Council\, in conjunction with the Northwestern art and theatre departments. \n\nORANGE CITY – An art exhibit\, Comedy of Errors\, in February in Orange CIty will feature the work of 15 regional artists. \n  \nThe Artists’ Showcase: Orange City Arts Council’s Regional Exhibition will be held Feb. 15-23 at the Northwestern College DeWitt Theatre Arts Center\, in conjunction with the college production of Shakespeare’s The Comedy of Errors.  \n  \nAn artists’ reception will be Saturday\, Feb. 23 from 6:30 to 7:25 p.m.\, prior to the final performance of The Comedy of Errors. The public is invited. \n  \nThe exhibit complements Shakespeare’s comic farce\, which features everything from slapstick and mistaken identity to reunions and reconciliations. Artists submitted their own interpretations of Comedy of Errors. \n  \n \nIowa Insect Series: Cicada by David Versluis and Roy R. Behrens \n\nThe juried show includes work by Dale Boone\, Bob Huibregtse\, Vanessa Reusch and Judy Thompson of Orange City; Joanne K. Alberda and David Lammers of Sioux Center;  Margo and Rein Vanderhill of Alton; Timothy J. Arand-McIlrath of Okoboji; Kayla Vetter of Storm Lake; Katlyn Loeschen of Algona; Paul Soderquist of Sibley; Ya-wen Liu\, an MOC-FV High School student in fall 2012\, from Chung-Li City\, Taiwan; and collaborative works by David Versluis of Sioux Center and Roy R. Director is Jeff Barker.\nELIGIBILITY & MEDIA\nThis exhibit is open to any adult\, college or high school-age artist\, from Iowa or within a 300-mile radius of Orange City\, Iowa. Artwork must be original in concept\, composition and execution. Artwork may not have been shown previously in an Orange City Arts Council exhibit. All 2-D and 3-D media will be considered\, and must be ready to hang/present. (Sawtooth hangers are not allowed.)\nTHEME OF EXHIBITION: COMEDY OF ERRORS\nShakespeare’s play\, Comedy of Errors\, features everything from slapstick to mistaken identity\, reunions to reconciliations. Artists are asked to submit their own interpretations of Comedy of Errors\, related to the play’s theme or their own conception. If desired\, include a written statement for the jurors on the relationship of submitted art to the theme.\nINSURANCE\nThe Orange City Arts Council will exercise all reasonable care in handling and hanging the art\, and do have limited insurance coverage. DESCRIPTION:  \n \nAn Evening of Dance: An Evening of Dance will be held Saturday\, Dec. 1 at the Orange City Town Hall\, featuring young dancers from Just for Kix and MOC-Floyd Valley High (pictured). The show\, sponsored by the Orange City Arts Council\, will be held from 5:30-6:00 p.m. \n\nORANGE CITY – The dance team from MOC-Floyd Valley High and students from Just For Kix will do a 30-minute show Saturday\, Dec. 1. \n  \nThe 5:30 – 6:00 p.m. performance will feature a variety of dance styles\, under the leadership of dance instructor Becky Donahue. The show\, featuring kick\, poms and jazz dance\, will be held at the Orange City Town Hall. \n  \nThe show is a celebration of the art of dance\, said Donahue. Many families are part of the dance community\, but Donahue wanted to share the dancers’ talents with the broader citizenry. \n  \n“It’s an opportunity for the community to see some great young dancers\,” said Donahue. \n  \nAdmission is $1 for adults\, free for students through college. \n  \nDecember 1 is Sinterklaas Day in Orange City\, so the public is invited to come early for Sinterklaas activities\, beginning at Windmill Park at 3:00 p.m. \n  \n \nAn Evening of Dance is sponsored by the Orange City Arts Council. They’re coming to Orange City and Sioux Center November 26 and 27\, sponsored by the Orange City Arts Council. \nStephens first discovered the magic of physical theatre in her church in Oklahoma City\, then spent three years studying with Marcel Marceau at his Paris school: L’Ecole Internationale de Mimodrame de Marcel Marceau. She spent a year and a half touring Europe with Mime de Rien. \nHatton also studied with Marceau\, in the States\, and at the Goldston and Johnson School for Mimes in Gambier\, Ohio. He has performed in schools across the country. More recently\, the two became a performing duo\, based in the Twin Cities. \nTheir inspirations include not only Marceau\, but also Red Skelton\, Charlie Chaplin\, Buster Keaton\, Lucille Ball and Monty Python. \nStephens and Hatton will do a public performance  – a tribute to Marceau – Tuesday\, November 27 at 7 p.m. at Northwestern College’s DeWitt Theatre Arts Center. SUMMARY:Mary Van Rheenen book signing & reception
DESCRIPTION:Mary Van Rheenen will be signing her recently published book\, The Treasure Team\, in the Rieckhoff Room at the Orange City Public Library on Tuesday\, November 27\, 4:30-5:30. The Treasure Team\, an adventure book for middle readers\, combines Van Rheenen’s interests in history\, anthropology\, and creative writing. \nVan Rheenen graduated from Northwestern College with a student-determined major in history and writing. She then did research for the Choctaw-Apache Tribe of Ebarb\, Louisiana\, for two years in the mid-1980s. The action of The Treasure Team takes place during this time period. The author has woven stories from actual oral history collected for the tribe into The Treasure Team. Though the book is a work of fiction\, Van Rheenen aims to give an accurate portrayal of the community’s unique history and heritage. According to at least one community elder who previewed the book\, she succeeded. \n“I love that book. This is my life.” \nAnother commented on the Tribe’s Facebook page\, “I enjoyed the book. The young characters could have been most anyone of us who grew up in the area. . .. Thanks Mary for your book and to the council for bringing her to the Tribal Office for a signed copy from her.” \nThe Treasure Team debuted this October with a book signing at the Ebarb Tribal office. \nThe traditionally Spanish-speaking Ebarb-Zwolle community dates back to Spanish colonial settlement in what is now northwest Louisiana. Both Choctaw from the east and Lipan Apache from the west mingled here. The book contains stories of country dances\, Native American stickball games\, working in the woods . . . and hunting for treasure. \nThe lively narrative of the book is enriched by the depth of Van Rheenen’s knowledge of local lore. After working for the Choctaw-Apache Community\, Van Rheenen earned a master’s in cultural anthropology from Louisiana State in Baton Rouge. She did fieldwork for her master’s thesis in the Ebarb community. \nVan Rheenen has won awards for both scholarly and creative writing. While living in Orange City\, she was a founding member of “The Live Poets’ Society” and wrote a Christmas program performed by the Trinity Reformed Church Sunday school. She taught writing at a medium security prison in Illinois before teaching in Northwestern’s anthropology/sociology department. She and her husband Keith Holmes then opened the Havergraan Baking Co. in Orange City with an adjacent coffee-shop/bookstore. Since 1996 they have lived in the Netherlands with their two daughters where they serve as resource coordinators for the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship’s mission team to the Romany (Gypsies) of Europe. \nYoung people and adults are invited to the reception/ book signing. Van Rheenen will also do short readings throughout the event. \nThe book signing is sponsored in part by the Orange City Arts Council. The Treasure Team will be available for the special book signing price of $12. A portion from the sale of each copy will be donated to the Choctaw-Apache’s Scholarship Fund. She has been with the Jazz Ambassadors for 13 years. \nThe 19-member ensemble is conducted by Chief Warrant Officer William McCulloch\, who enlisted in the Army in 1991 as a percussionist and was appointed a bandmaster in 2000. \nPast performance highlights include the Montreux\, North Sea and Newport Jazz Festivals; World War II 50th anniversary commemorations in the United States and Europe; and performances in India and Japan. DESCRIPTION:Contempo Physical Dance \n\nORANGE CITY – “One of the fiercest and finest movers in the Twin Cities” – that’s what the Minneapolis StarTribune said about Marciano Silva dos Santos. \n  \n“With an action-figure physique and a reputation for fluid lyricism\, Brazilian-born dos Santos has erupted on many Twin Cities stages.” \n  \nDos Santos and his ensemble\, Contempo Physical Dance\, will perform and teach classes in Orange City\, Alton and Sioux Center September 29 through October 2. \n  \nContempo Physical Dance’s work is a fusion of Afro-Brazilian dance\, capoeira and contemporary dance. Dos Santos studied at FAFI\, a professional performing arts school in Vitória\, Brazil. He worked with three dance companies in Vitória\, an Afro-Brazilian\, a ballet and a contemporary dance company… earning international critical acclaim. He has been part of the Minnesota dance community since ’06\, named “Best Dancer” by City Pages in ’09 and “one of the most graceful movers on any Twin Cities stage” by the StarTribune in ’10. He directs Contempo and teaches dance at the University of Minnesota. \n  \nContempo’s work is based in Afro-Brazilian dance and capoeira\, said Roxanne Wallace-Patterson\, a member of Contempo. “But there is nothing like it here\,” she told the StarTribune. “It is so fresh and original. It’s like Marciano has taken the language of all these styles and is speaking in his own … voice.” \n  \nContempo Physical Dance’s schedule begins with a 60-minute dance workshop and exercise session on Afro-Brazilian dance\, designed for Zumba lovers and anyone\, at Orange City Physical Therapy at 9:00 am Sept. 29. Taught by dos Santos. Location:  101 3rd St. NW\, Orange City.Cost is $5. \n  \nTwo 90-minute classes will be held for dance students\, at Robin’s School of Dance\, 1602 1st Ave. SW\, in Sioux Center. The classes will focus on dance technique\, and feature Afro-Brazilian dance. The class for ages 8-12 begins at 3 pm and the class for ages 13-18\, at 4:30 pm\, both on Sat.\, Sept. 29. DESCRIPTION:Country star from the Netherlands performing in Orange City August 25: Ben Steneker\, the father of Dutch country music\, has performed in the States over 30 times\, and for many years at the National Old-Time Music Festival in Le Mars. This year he's adding Orange City to his tour\, and doing a show at Windmill Park August 25 at 7 p.m. \n\nORANGE CITY – Ben Steneker\, country music star from the Netherlands\, is doing a show in Orange City Saturday\, Aug. 25. \n  \nThe free performance is at Windmill Park at 7 p.m. \n  \nSteneker\, dubbed “the godfather of Dutch country\,” introduced country music to the Netherlands. This native of Friesland began his career over 50 years ago\, after winning talent contests\, then recording a single that made number four in the Dutch Hit Parade. \n  \nIn ’81 he was invited to the States by Bob Everhart\, and has performed 30-plus times here\, from Nashville to Indianapolis. He has become a regular at Everhart’s Old-Time Music Festival\, and is coming again this month\, to the 37th festival in Le Mars Aug. 27-Sept. 2. \n  \nSteneker is a great entertainer with “an incredible voice\,” said Everhart\, and versatile too\, even singing opera in the Netherlands. A Dutch fan of Steneker’s\, Jaap Van Aalst\, who was diagnosed with terminal lung cancer\, received his last wish in 2011. Van Aalst was able to travel from his home in the Netherlands to Le Mars\, to hear Steneker & his daughter Carmen perform. Van Aalst loved the Stenekers’ songs\, especially “Until the Answer Comes\,” a gospel tune about praying continuously\, and “The Gift\,” about a poor girl whose gift to Christ is all she has: a tiny bird with a broken wing. \n  \nThe magazine Texas Proud honored Steneker as “best foreign artist of the year” in ’81.  In ’94\, Steneker was inducted as the only European in the Mid America Country Hall of Fame\, and in 2010 Ben and Carmen’s album\, Homeland\, was awarded international CD of the year by the Rural Roots Commission. \n  \nNow Steneker and his wife Irene live near Haaksbergen\, and in the Netherlands he is a household name\, like Johnny Cash in the States. In fact\, Steneker has shared the stage with Johnny Cash. In 2000\, Steneker was named the first member of the “Dutch Country Hall of Fame.” He has received honors from the mayor of Haaksbergen and Queen Beatrix\, and in ’07 celebrated his 50th year as a country-western singer with a sold-out\, televised show. \n  \nThe August 25 event is free of charge\, thanks to Precision Alignment of Maurice\, Four-Way Roofing of Alton and the Orange City Arts Council. \n  \nBring lawn chairs or blankets. Their fourth member\, Renee Harcourt will be unable to attend\, but Blame Sally will be joined by Rob Strom on bass. They disregarded conventional wisdom\, beginning Blame Sally “to represent the spirit of music for its own sake–and not necessarily for fortune and fame\,” says Diane Urbani de la Paz\, from the Peninsula Daily News. \n  \nTheir lyrics and harmonies tell tales of life’s tragedies and triumphs\, and as Vintage Guitar Magazine says\, “There’s a lot of Stevie Nicks in Blame Sally’s countrified folk rock\, but these veterans are less full of themselves\, earthier\, more self-assured – and more fun\, too.”  Their unique instrumental blend of drums\, organ\, guitar\, banjo\, harmonica\, piano\, and accordion combines with soulful vocals to make the sound that is Blame Sally.  Their performance promises passion. \n  \nThese talented women mark the leg of their August tour as a homecoming\, as they are returning from their third tour in Germany. DESCRIPTION:ORANGE CITY – Americana roots rock band plays blues\, country and meat & potatoes rock. \n  \nFor a sound that is “appropriately and unapologetically Iowan\,” see the Des Moines-based rock band\, Brother Trucker. Forty-one local students are acting and singing in the show\, along with Karen Killion of Missoula Children’s Theatre. \n  \nKillion\, along with Adam Ferguson of MCT\, conducted auditions Monday morning\, July 16\, and are rehearsing this week with the cast. \n  \nRachel Korver is playing Cinderella; Chloe Krommendyk\, Raggedy Annie the Fairy Godmother; Regan Rowenhorst\, Rags the Prince; and Karen Killion of MCT\, Patches. The evil stepmother will be Riley Rowenhorst; and the stepsisters\, Lovely and Beauty\, are Haley Smit and Juliana Tien. \n  \nRachel Durham is assistant director; Adam Ferguson of MCT\, director; and Kate Noteboom of Alton\, pianist. \n  \nThe town criers are Parker Van Kley and Sera Burg\, and the king is Isaac Krommendyk. Cleo the Cat will be played by Tori Van Ravenswaay\, and Fido the Dog\, Brody Ohm. \n  \nKylie Kurtz\, Logan Huizenga and Kaitlyn Bruinsma are the pumpkins. This concert will bring you back to the summer nights of the seventies\, and will also feature a number of marches from Henry Fillmore and Sousa. \n  \nThe community band is made up of outstanding local musicians\, and is directed by Carla Van Beek\, who has served as the director for 15 years. The 2012 Summer Suites will be held Monday\, June 25 in three backyard gardens. \n  \nThe evening begins at 6:30 p.m. \n  \nThe “progressive concert” will feature Rebecca and Laremy DeVries with vocals and guitar\, Jon Haverdink on cello\, dancer Claire Foughty and storyteller Dr. A. J. Neumann. \n  \nRebecca and Laremy DeVries will grace one of the Summer Suites gardens with guitar and vocals\, with maybe some mandolin and drums. Bluegrass is their style\, old-fashioned music with easy harmonies. \n  \nThese Dordt graduates like the feel of Gillian Welch music – one of the award-winning artists in O Brother\, Where Art Thou. They will play some Welch\, also some Paul Simon and Emily Lou Harris. Hopefully everyone will recognize at least one piece. \n  \nThe DeVries couple lived in the Netherlands for a year\, but don’t claim any Dutch influence on their music. Laremy did learn to play the mandolin when they lived in Annapolis\, where they did a lot of jamming with other musicians.  They miss that\, but there’s not much extra time with two children in the picture: Corrie\, 4\, and Nico\, 5 months.  Plus Rebecca teaches English at Unity Christian High and the duo owns The Fruited Plain in Sioux Center. \n \nMusic by Rebecca and Laremy DeVries on June 25: Bluegrass? Yep\, Rebecca and Laremy DeVries like the Gillian Welch style\, old-fashioned music with easy harmonies\, they said. Even when they lead music at church\, they can't avoid bringing in a taste of bluegrass. Orange City Arts Council's Summer Suites will include music by the DeVries duo. \n\n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n \nCellist Jon Haverdink to perform: One Summer Suites performance on June 25 will be Jon Haverdink on the cello. Last year Haverdink took first place at Orange City's Got Talent\, and he was a semi-finalist at the Bill Riley Talent Search at the Iowa State Fair. One of Haverdink's pieces will be The Swan by Saint-Saëns\, accompanied in dance by Claire Foughty. \n\nJon Haverdink\, cellist\, is a 2012 graduate of MOC-Floyd Valley High and has been a member of the Iowa All State Orchestra for two years and the All State Choir for one year. Last summer\, Haverdink took first place at Orange City’s Got Talent and was a semi-finalist in the Bill Riley Talent Search at the Iowa State Fair. \n  \nThe son of Greg and Laura Haverdink and a cello student of Mr. Joe Shufro of Morningside College\, Haverdink has played in the Sioux City Youth Symphony\, plus participated in many music\, theatre and speech activities at MOC-FV. He plans to attend UNI and earn a degree in cello performance/ pedagogy/ composition. \n  \n \nClaire Foughty began dancing when she was 3 years old\, and has been taking dance lessons ever since. She is currently attending Iowa State University\, where she has been able to continue dance studies including ballroom dancing. Claire is studying elementary education at Iowa State University\, where she is focusing on K-12 English as a second language. She hopes to one day be able to teach English overseas.  \n\nOne of Haverdink’s pieces at Summer Suites will be The Swan by Camille Saint-Saëns\, accompanied in dance by Claire Foughty. He also plans to perform a Kabalevsky concerto. Accompanist will be Laura Haverdink. \n  \nDr. A. J. Neumann will tell stories at one of the Summer Suites gardens – stories about veterinary practice in Sioux County from 1949 to the present and stories about Orange City. \n  \n“Those days are gone forever\,” said Doc Neumann\, 86\, referring to veterinary practices like Sioux Vet Clinic\, where Neumann made 30 or 40 calls a day. He and his fellow vets each put 90\,000 miles per year on their work vehicles – seeing a lot of life in rural northwest Iowa. \n  \nDoc and Mary Neumann’s children decided not to follow his footsteps\, their son saying\, “Dad\, you spend too much time in your truck.” But the Neumanns’ three children are all working in medicine. \n  \nSummer Suites will be held in the gardens of Darrel and Karla Kroese\, Tom and Jen Olsen and Leroy and Jasey Van Kekerix. DESCRIPTION:Festival Latino begins at 5:00pm at Orange City's Windmill Park Wed. June 6\, with games\, food\, arts and music. At 7:00pm\, the featured show starts: two dance troupes from Sioux City: Estrellas de Jalisco and La Perla Tapatia. The event is free\, sponsored by Advance Pierre Foods and the Orange City Arts Council's Onstage Orange City. Support is also provided from the Sioux County Community Foundation. \n\nORANGE CITY – It’s a celebration! Festival Latino is scheduled for Wed. June 6 at Orange City’s Windmill Park\, part of the Onstage Orange City series. \n  \nThe fun begins at 5:00pm with many free activities: arts and crafts\, face and nail painting\, bingo/ loteria and a bouncy castle. Planned also are music\, puppets\, stories\, and dance lessons. \n  \nAll budding artists are welcome to enter the piñata design contest. Bring your homemade piñata at 5:00pm\, including a string for hanging. Prizes will be awarded in three age groups\, and announced at 7:00pm. \n  \nAuthentic Latino crafts will be displayed\, and fair trade crafts from Guatemala and other Central and South American countries will be available for sale. \n  \nAnd a soccer challenge is planned\, on Arizona Avenue west of the shelter. \n  \nMexican food will be served from 5:30-6:30pm\, at a small charge: $3 for adults\, $1.50 for children under age 10. \n  \nThe featured entertainment begins shortly after 7:00pm. Two dance troupes from Sioux City will perform\, an adult and a junior troupe: Estrellas de Jalisco (The Stars of Jalisco) and La Perla Tapatia (The Pearls of Guadalajara). One crowd-pleaser is a dance featuring both girls and boys\, The Santa Rita Polka. Directors are Rosa Loza and David Lillie. \n  \nMexico’s traditional dances have been influenced by Europeans – Spanish\, German and French – plus indigenous groups. Folkloric groups are often formed by Mexican-Americans to pass cultural traditions to their children. \n  \nRosa Loza moved to the States from Mexico – from Atengo\, Jalisco – when she was 19. She began a traditional dance troupe in Sioux City in the early 90s\, when her daughter was three\, first learning the dances of Jalisco\, done to mariachi music. Later Loza learned elegant dances\, charro and caporal dances – those of ranches and farmlands. She designs and sews costumes\, and does embroidery. \n  \nSponsors of Festival Latino are AdvancePierre Foods and the Orange City Arts Council\, with support from the Sioux County Community Foundation. \n  \nBring lawn chairs or blankets. DESCRIPTION:Check out summer art classes 2012. The Orange City Arts Council is sponsoring five classes for children: Creating Portraits; Ceramics;  Zip\, Zap\, Zog: Exploring Theatre; Exploring Theatre on Stage; and Beginning Guitar. For adults\, the Arts Council is offering one class: Try Your Hand at Portraits. \nClasses are scheduled between June 4 and July 13. \nAnd Missoula Children’s Theatre is coming this year! DESCRIPTION:ORANGE CITY – Kelley Hunt\, Lionel Young\, Blame Sally\, Brother Trucker and Bella Ruse are all part of the line-up for Onstage Orange City 2012. \n  \nThe Orange City Arts Council has announced its schedule for shows in Orange CIty’s Windmill Park for the upcoming summer season. \n  \nThe series will feature 13 Wednesday nights of entertainment\, beginning with May 30 and the Lionel Young Band from Boulder\, CO\, a double-winner of the International Blues Challenge. \n  \n \nSeason opener: Lionel Young Band… The Lionel Young Band\, the first ever double winner at the International Blues Challenge\, will perform its distinctive brand of blues on May 30\, as the season opener for Onstage Orange City. The Orange City Arts Council\, with support from local businesses\, sponsors the Wednesday night series in Orange City's Windmill Park. \n\nOther artists include the young a cappella group Six Appeal June 13\, the comedian and magician Jerry Frasier July 18\, Americana roots rock band Brother Trucker July 25\, Kelley Hunt and her band singing blues\, roots and gospel August 8 and countrified folk-rock band Blame Sally August 22. \n  \n \nKelley Hunt to perform August 8: Kelley Hunt's blues\, roots and gospel come with a refreshing originality. From Lawrence\, KS\, she brings her band to Onstage Orange City on August 8. \n\nFestival Latino is scheduled for June 6\, and will feature Estrella de Jalisco and La Perla Tapatia from Sioux City. Local favorite Bella Ruse will perform July 4\, following an old-fashioned Independence Day celebration. \n  \nThe SchoolHouse Company returns again on August 15\, bringing family-friendly theatre. On June 27\, the second annual Orange City’s Got Talent! show will be featured\, in conjunction with the open house of Prairie Winds Event Center.
