SUMMARY:The OK Factor: July 17
DESCRIPTION:Olivia Diercks and Karla Colahan\, cellist and violinist of the new-classical crossover duo\, The OK Factor\, have one word to describe their musical connection: lucky. \nOrganic and genuine\, their original compositions feel both comfortingly familiar and uniquely fresh\, and have been described as “genre-bending” (Julie Amacher\, MPR) and “pure magic” (Wausau Pilot & Review). \n  \n \n  \n  \nThe ease with which they write and perform has caught the attention of the Minnesota music community in which they live and work\, bringing them success on stages such as The Cedar Cultural Center and as frequent featured artists with Minnesota Public Radio. Their distinct compositional and performance style awarded them the honor of being finalists for the prestigious McKnight Fellowships for Musicians in 2018. \n  \nOlivia and Karla are also sought-after collaborators\, having partnered with numerous Minnesota composers and musicians including singer-songwriters Ellis Delaney and Lynn O’Brien\, percussionists Jenny Klukken and Krissy Bergmark\, and composer Mischa Santora\, among others. They have appeared as opening acts for Charlie Parr\, The High Kings\, and Swedish quintet Jaerv\, as well as composers-in-residence for digital music library Black Label Music. The OK Factor has produced three studio albums of their original music and arrangements: Water Street (’14)\, That’s Enough of That (’16)\, and Have Yourself an OK Christmas (’17). \nBrought To You By:

SUMMARY:Max Hatt / Edda Glass: July 3
DESCRIPTION:Bossa Nova\, Americana\, and Folk music come together in this truly impressive\, genuinely unique duo. Praised by critics for their incredible sound and extraordinary lyrics\, Max Hatt / Edda Glass have recently been beloved by NPR\, the legendary Daytrotter studio\, PBS\, Paste magazine\, Huffington Post\, and the Lincoln Center\, to name just a few. \n  \n \n  \nMax Hatt / Edda Glass have “an incomparable spook” (Nashville Scene) and a “unique sound” (Larry Groce\, NPR Mountain Stage)\, comprised of Glass’s unmistakable voice\, Hatt’s epic guitar landscapes\, and their award-winning Jazz Americana compositions. Praised for her “impeccable vocal command” (PopMatters) and compared to a gamut of singers from Astrud Gilberto to Billie Holliday\, Glass’s voice is ultimately “one of a kind…you cannot confuse her with another artist” (New York Theatre Guide). Hatt’s equally distinctive guitar work combines the harmonic innovations of jazz with the melodic resonance of folk\, creating music that’s “subtly poignant\, elegantly funky\, and haunting without trying to be” (Nels Cline\, Wilco). With a new album produced by Wilco’s Pat Sansone\, they’ve toured coast-to-coast from NYC’s Lincoln Center to NPR Mountain Stage\, Sundance Film Fest\, and Wilco’s Solid Sound Festival. \n  \n \n  \nMax Hatt / Edda Glass began in Montana\, where Hatt had a jazz trio and Glass had a knack for singing Brazilian Portuguese. Glass sat in on songs like “Girl from Ipanema” and they soon became the state’s only Bossa Nova band\, honing their original material on the side. On long drives between Bossa Nova gigs\, Glass wrote lyrics to Hatt’s solo guitar compositions: “Max’s compositions are so cinematic\,” she recalls\, “and you look out the window and it’s like the camera’s panning for you\, over these enormous landscapes\, and you start expecting something to happen— a story to begin.” This highway collaboration took them all the way to New York City at Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts\, where the two unknowns won the 2014 Grand Prize of the International Mountain Stage / NewSong Competition. It was there that their songs of migrating geese\, dispossessed tribes\, and mysteries in the wheat fields captured the attention of their future producer\, Pat Sansone. “I was mesmerized from the first moment I heard them\,” Sansone recalls. “They have the ability to create a deep sonic landscape with only voice and guitar\, with songs that poses a mysterious and soulful magic.” \n  \nHatt grew up in the Chicago-land area\, studied jazz guitar in the David Baker program at Indiana University\, and has taken classes with Pat Metheny\, Julian Lage\, and Lee Retinour. The daughter of a jazz trombonist and a music aficionado\, Glass was likewise steeped in jazz\, and learned to sing in Portuguese through obsessive teenage listening to an obscure Nara Leão album (followed by the famous Getz/Gilberto). With other influences ranging from Neil Young to J.D. Salinger\, Homer\, Jim Jarmusch\, and Casablanca\, the duo truly creates “a unique sound harmoniously forged from seemingly disparate elements\,” (Larry Groce of NPR Mountain Stage). \n  \nBrought To You By:\n \n \n  \n

SUMMARY:"A Night at the Opera"
DESCRIPTION:Northwestern College’s 24-member Heritage Singers chamber choir will perform “A Night at the Opera” on Friday and Saturday\, Jan. 25 and 26\, at 7:30 p.m. in the England Proscenium Theatre of the DeWitt Theatre Arts Center. \nAdmission is free\, but tickets are required and should be reserved with Nora Verburg at the music office\, 712-707-7062. Order tickets early to obtain the best seats. \nThe hourlong comedy opens with the death of a wealthy landowner whose relatives have gathered in anticipation of their inheritance\, only to learn that all the money has been willed to a local charity. \n“The bulk of the opera tells of the relatives’ scheming attempts to change the will to their own advantage\,” says Dr. Thomas Holm\, professor of music and director of the Heritage Singers. “Themes of love\, greed\, hypocrisy\, deception and justice intersect as the story unfolds\, calling on the audience to embrace the idea that ‘the end justifies the means.’” \nHolm says there’s much humor in the satirical comedic opera as the flaws of humanity are depicted in an exaggerated way. “The audience can both identify with and be repulsed by the characters. It’s an engaging story that portrays human character traits we can all relate to\,” he says. \nApril Hubbard\, instructor in theatre\, is directing the opera.

SUMMARY:Northwestern College to Present Christmas Vespers
DESCRIPTION:The Northwestern College music department will present its annual Christmas Vespers concert on Saturday\, Dec. 1\, at 7 p.m. and Sunday\, Dec. 2\, at 3 p.m. in Christ Chapel. The ensemble will also sing “I Wonder as I Wander\,” arranged by John Rutter; “Mary\, Did You Know?” arranged by Craig Courtney; “Sweetest Music\, Softly Stealing” by Elaine Hagenberg; and “Kyrie” by Ugis Praulins\, among several other works. \nThe event will also include performances by the Brass Ensemble\, Women’s Choir and Chamber Orchestra. \nThe Women’s Choir’s repertoire will include John Englert’s “Veni\, Veni Emmanuel” and “How Great Our Joy” by Courtney.
