DESCRIPTION:Watercolor Batik Workshop\nCreate translucent watercolor on textured Japanese Paper\nArtist/Instructor Judy Thompson\n(for high school and adults) \nSaturday\, June 6: 9am to 2pm\nNorthwestern College Korver Art Center\, Room 103 \nBatik is a century old process of decorating cloth using wax and dye. Using a similar process\, you will create beautiful translucent watercolor paintings on textured Japanese paper. Judy will demonstrate and instruct each step of this unique and fascinating process. Come join us for a fun\, hands-on workshop. Adult learners of all levels are welcome. \nClass members will complete a tulip painting similar to the one below. Each student will use the same template\, but all of the paintings will be unique. \nThe day will include a break for lunch. \nJudy Thompson’s artwork has received regional and national awards and has been exhibited in galleries and museums throughout the Midwest. She has been selected twice as an Artist-in-Residence with the National Park System (Nebraska and South Dakota)\, and is an approved teaching artist for the Nebraska Arts Council. Through a grant\, awarded by the Iowa Arts Council\, her Homestead Series has toured the Midwest to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the Homestead Act. SUMMARY:Onstage Orange City: Moon Hooch
DESCRIPTION:Moon Hooch — an energetic trio with genre-bending music — is performing a free show Wed.\, June 3\, at 7 p.m. at Windmill Park in Orange City. \nWhen Orange City Arts members heard locals buzzing about the band’s unique sound — two souped-up saxophones and a drum — they knew they had to see if they’d perform for the Onstage Orange City series. \nSteve Mahr\, co-owner of The Old Factory\, became entranced with the band’s wailing sax and staccato snare after watching them perform in NPR’s popular Tiny Desk Concert series. \n“I’m not sure what others’ responses are\, seeing a wild man blowing the sax with a traffic cone as a mute – but mine was love at first sight\,” Mahr said. \nHis enthusiasm for the “cave music” band spread to Janine Calsbeek\, director of Orange City Arts\, who reached out to the band’s reps. \nTo her surprise\, Moon Hooch — comprised of saxophonists Mike Wilbur and Wenzl McGowen\, and drummer James Muschler — had an open date available on their tour from Ohio to Minnesota\, and were interested in making a pit stop in Iowa. \nThere was just one minor caveat — Orange City Arts had to drum up the funds to keep the show free. Mahr stepped in to help fundraise\, and Old Factory Coffee Shop\, along with Orange City’s Quatro Composites™\, joined as corporate sponsors for the free outdoor event. \nThe concert is open to all ages\, and the original\, unexpected tunes are sure to wow the young — and young at heart. But to describe the band’s sound? That’s a tough one. They have an inventive style all their own — something between jazz and dubstep\, with a rock-vibe for good measure. \nEach band member studied in New York at the New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music. Their stylistic choices — like using modified saxophones to create pulsing beats — creates indescribable music. \nThe band (which provides soundtracks for famously epic NYC subway dance parties\, according to The New Yorker) describes their work “like house music\, but more wild\, more jagged\, more free\, more natural to live in.” \nMoon Hooch got its start playing on subway platforms\, and quickly grew a devoted fanbase that led to a national tour with They Might Be Giants\, and multiple gigs on the festival circuit. \n“Moon Hooch is amazing! They’re over the top\,” Calsbeek said. “Very energetic and crazy. Their music is not for the faint of heart — it’s something different and I think it’ll be appealing to a lot of ages.” \nJudging from previous shows\, Moon Hooch’s power-packed performance promises to get audience members talking — and maybe even dancing out of their seats. Attendees are invited to bring their own lawn chairs or blankets. SUMMARY:Onstage Orange City begins at Tulip Festival
DESCRIPTION:Three bands will perform during Tulip Festival to kick off the Orange City Arts Council’s annual summer series\, Onstage Orange City.\nOrange City’s own Usual Suspects (pictured above: Steve Mason\, John Hubers\, Sam Martin\, Gary Reinders & Joel Westerholm) will perform on Thursday night\, May 14. The band plays a variety of musical styles\, including classic acoustic-based pop and rock\, blues\, contemporary folk and original songs. The Usual Suspects will also perform during Tulip Festival’s ArtBurst event on Saturday\, May 16\, from 10 a.m. to noon and 4 to 6 p.m. in the Straatmarkt.\nNow Serving 7 (right)\, a Christian electro-coustic pop/rock band based in Pella\, Iowa\, will take the stage on Friday night\, May 15. They have performed with artists like Jeremy Camp and Superchick and at official NASCAR events. Making their third consecutive-year appearance at Tulip Festival\, Now Serving 7 will perform songs from their debut album\, “I Will Go.”\nDamon Dotson (below left) is a singer-songwriter originally from Okoboji\, Iowa. He performs in a variety of venues throughout the Midwest\, including Minneapolis\, Omaha and Chicago. He has opened for artists Willie Nelson and the Beach Boys\, among others. Dotson and his band members will perform songs from their new and rising album\, “Tumblin’\,”on Saturday night\, May 16.\n“We’re excited to partner with the Orange City Arts Council to open their summer series during Tulip Festival\,” says Juliana Pennings\, Tulip Festival & Community Tourism Director. “We are grateful for the many ways the Orange City Arts Council continues to promote and bring the arts to our community.”\nThe concerts will take place at the band shell in Windmill Park at 7:30 p.m. each evening\, and there is no cost to attend. Paulo Padilha and Group\, from Sao Paulo\, will spend a week in the Orange City area October 5-10\, conducting workshops and performing. DESCRIPTION:ORANGE CITY – Acclaimed classical guitarist Peter Fletcher will perform in Orange City Friday\, October 3 at 7:00pm at the Orange City Public Library\, part of a nationwide tour. \nFletcher began guitar study at age seven\, and a few years later\, spent a week in a master class with José Tomás\, assistant teacher to Andrés Segovia. Fletcher\, at age 12\, was the youngest student to perform. He earned his masters in music from the Eastman School of Music\, under Nicholas Goluses. \nHe has performed across the country\, making his New York debut at Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall in ’07\, and\, in 2010\, playing to a sold-out crowd. \nFletcher’s many recordings include Federico Mompou: Guitar Works. In Barcelona\, when Fletcher performed for Mompou’s widow\, Carmen Bravo\, she commented on Fletcher’s “high technical level” and “refined sensibility.” \nHis most recent album features the music of Edvard Grieg\, transcribed by Fletcher. His October 3 program will feature music by Grieg\, Praetorius\, Frescobaldi\, and Villa-Lobos plus Jesu\, Joy of Man’s Desiring by Bach\, Fandango by Spanish composer Rodrigo\, and Four Catalan Folksongs by Llobet. \nHe also performs the traditional Shaker hymn\, Simple Gifts. The last half of this guitar setting modulates down a step to C major. DESCRIPTION:ORANGE CITY – Singer-songwriter Amy Noelck of Dallas is performing in Orange City Wednesday\, August 27. It’s the final Onstage Orange City show of summer 2014\, sponsored by the Orange City Arts Council. The show will be held at 7:00pm in the Northwestern College Christ Chapel in Orange City. \nSponsors of the event are Iowa State Bank and Quatro Composites™. \nOpening the evening are Northwestern College students Sean Russell and Clarissa Oehler\, “This Much\,” performing from 7:00 to 7:30pm. From Prairie de Chien\, WI\, the duo has performed and led worship together for years\, and competed in NCDC here last year. They sing\, with Russell accompanying on guitar or piano. \nAmy Noelck will take the stage at 7:30pm. Noelck\, who has roots in Iowa\, performs songs of love\, faith\, heartbreak and hope. “I try to write music with lyrics that reveal the transparency of life… I write about brokenness so those that are hurting and longing for something to fulfill them\, will see that they are not alone.  We are constantly searching for peace and joy\, but I am confident that lasting peace and joy cannot be found in anything\, unless first found in Jesus.” \nThe proceeds from her album go to anti-human trafficking organizations around the world\, especially Traffick 911\, the Dallas/ Fort Worth organization working primarily with children; and the A21 Campaign\, an organization which raises awareness\, prevents future trafficking\, takes legal action and provides rehabilitation services for survivors. \nNoelck works with family life and children’s ministry in a Dallas church\, and is looking into opportunities to work as a singer-songwriter\, teaching music to orphans overseas. \nThe concert will not be Windmill Park or the Northwestern College Green. This comic stunt juggler from St. Cloud is bringing his nuttiness in Orange City’s Windmill Park Wednesday\, Aug. 20 at 7:00pm. \nWilson’s show is part of the Orange City Arts Council’s Onstage Orange City series. Sponsors are Diamond Vogel Paint and Four-Way Roofing of Alton. \nWilson grew up skiing\, skateboarding and waterskiing\, all perfect for this self-described “introverted show-off.” His life changed when a friend loaned him professional juggling equipment… and he checked out jugglers at the Minnesota Renaissance Fair. So when he considered college and career options a few months later\, he decided to set his sights on becoming a professional juggler. \nHe succeeded\, and has been a crowd favorite at the Renaissance Fair for more than three decades. \nWilson likes performing stunts that involve the whole body. Rather than simply standing still while throwing things\, he now has some bizarre skills: rope walking\, ball spinning\, balancing on a ladder\, manipulating objects on mouthsticks\, and more. At age 50\, he mastered balancing on a ladder… on a rope… on fire! \nIn addition to manipulating props\, Wilson also builds them\, for himself and other professional jugglers. We’ve done shows with music in them\, but this year the majority of the show is sung or has underscoring. DESCRIPTION:ORANGE CITY – The Orange City Area Community Band will take the stage for its final 2014 concert on Wed. July 30 in Orange City’s Windmill Park. Dan Mangold will be guest director. \nThe concert will feature a variety of music\, including España Cañi\, a Spanish pasodoble march often used as background music in bullfights in Spain\, and occasionally in baseball matches in the States; and Ammerland by Dutch composer Jacob de Haan\, named for a beautiful lake region in Germany. \nThe community band will play a famous Pirates of the Caribbean piece: Symphonic Suite from The Curse of the Black Pearl. \nOther pieces will be Trombone King\, a march by Karl King; the hymn arrangement of Beautiful Savior by James Swearingen; and a piece written in the classic American folk style: Cumberland Cross by Carl Strommen. \nGuest conductor Dan Mangold is band director at MOC-Floyd Valley Middle School\, assistant marching band director for the Pride of the Dutchmen marching band\, and a trumpeter in the Orange City Area Community Band and Northwest Iowa Symphony Orchestra. \n \nLong-time community band director\, Carla Van Beek\, directed her final concert July 9\, after 17 years. \nThe concert is part of the Onstage Orange City series\, sponsored by the Orange City Arts Council. DESCRIPTION:  \nORANGE CITY – It’s been 17 years. Wednesday\, July 9 will be Carla Van Beek’s final evening as director of the Orange City Area Community Band. \nThe concert\, part of the Onstage Orange City series\, will begin at 7:00pm in Windmill Park. Sponsors are CIVCO Medical Solutions and Fareway\, in conjunction with the Orange City Arts Council. \nVan Beek began as director of the Community Band in 1997\, recruited by Joyce Bloemendaal\, then director of the Arts Council. Of course\, Van Beek and music have been a duo all of her life… young Carla played piano and flute\, and teenage Carla served as drum major for the Rock Valley marching band. She fell in love with all three. \nAfter the Van Beek children started school\, she returned to college at Northwestern\, then taught at Hospers Christian School. She became band director at Unity Christian High in ’96. \nAnd she played in the community band\, under directors Steve Connell and Brad Miedema\, prior to taking the baton herself. \nIt’s amazing\, said Van Beek\, that these high school and adult musicians can get together for one night of rehearsal – “90 minutes in a hot and humid garage\, the back of the bandshell” – and create wonderful music. Obviously they are outstanding musicians\, she said. \nOf course\, those night-before-the-concert rehearsals don’t always go smoothly. Plans change\, and Van Beek hustles to find another trumpeter or percussionist. Or the weather refuses to cooperate. \n“One rehearsal night\, the tornado siren went off… we ended up in the basement of the Vogel paint store!” she said. Dave Bloemendaal\, tuba player for the band\, had his keys to the Vogel-Vande Brake store\, and led the troops\, leaving his oversized instrument to fend for itself. \nVan Beek has loved finding music with audience appeal: marches\, musicals\, Disney songs\, hymn arrangements\, and patriotic tunes. In fact\, her first concert as director – July 9\, ’97 – was a patriotic concert\, so July 9\, ’14 will be also. The show will include Washington Post March\, Semper Fidelis\, Stars and Stripes\, El Capitan\, Colonel Bogey\, and Armed Forces Salute. \nVan Beek commends the Orange City Arts Council and City of Orange City for their long commitment to the band… and she has so many people to thank\, including the audience\, the performers\, and her husband Arlo\, that she could go on for days. \nThe July 9 concert will be the second community band concert this summer. The final will be held July 30\, with Dan Mangold directing. \nThe concert will follow the Orange City Community appreciation meal. DESCRIPTION:ORANGE CITY – The Orange City Area Community Band will take the stage for their first 2014 concert on Wed. June 25\, and Tom Forkenbrock of Chicago will be the guest soloist. \nThe concert is beginning the 17th year of the band under the direction of Carla Van Beek. It is part of the Orange City Arts Council’s Onstage Orange City series\, and sponsored by Diamond Vogel Paint and Van Engelenhoven Agency. \nThe concert will be held in Orange City’s Windmill Park at 7:00pm. \nIt promises to be a fun-filled evening of music\, featuring some of Van Beek’s favorites over the past 17 years: A Day at Disneyland\, Grease!\, Pop & Rock Legends: Neil Diamond\,  I Dreamed a Dream\, Star Dust\, That Old Time Religion\, Praise to the Lord the Almighty and Flight of Valor.  \nForkenbrock\, who played trumpet with the U.S. Army Band for nine years\, will solo with the band this week. Forkenbrock will be featured in I Dreamed a Dream\, Star Dust and That Old Time Religion. \nThe Orange City native graduated from M-OC High School in ’82\, then enlisted in the U.S. Army. He has performed for two presidents\, Ronald Reagan and George Bush Sr.\, plus Prince Charles and other dignitaries from around the world. He also played for the Pan American Games and the ’88 Olympics in South Korea. \nSince leaving the Army\, Forkenbrock has performed with big bands\, wind ensembles and other performing groups in the Chicago area\, and with artists including Bill Watrous\, Dick Oatts\, Joe LaBarbera\, Chuck Findley and Bill Porter.  His bands have opened for Maynard Ferguson\, Buddy Rich\, Ramsey Lewis and Count Basie’s Big Band. \nForkenbrock regularly performs with “Brass From The Past”\, a 60’s-80’s classic rock\, Motown and soul group\, as well as in the College of Lake County Wind Ensemble.  He also plays French horn\, baritone and tuba\, but his first and most enduring love\, he said\, is the trumpet\, which he has played for nearly 40 years. \nForkenbrock is returning after performing with the Orange City Area Community Band in 2010 and ’11. \nThe concert is free and open to the public. Listeners will get a chance to hear tango music by Astor Piazzolla\, songs of the Argentinian gaúchos by Alberto Ginastera\, and folk-influenced Brazilian pieces by Heitor Villa-Lobos. \nMcGarvey\, of Alton\, is actively teaching private lessons and working as a freelance musician in northwest Iowa\, and plans to attend graduate school in the near future to pursue a degree in ethnomusicology. \nLori Vande Brake is McGarvey’s accompanist. \n \nLisa Laird and Lily \n\nLisa Laird\, of Orange City\,  was honored to be asked to be a featured performer at the International Ventriloquism ConVENTion in July.  Other performers include Jeff Dunham (seen on David Letterman and The Tonight Show) and Terry Fator (winner of America’s Got Talent\, season two).  So Laird is doing her adult ventriloquism show first at Summer Suites. Kids will love it too! \nFourteen years ago\, Laird was drawn into the world of puppetry by her sons Matt and Dan\, and completed several levels of training. She worked with puppets in the preschool classroom until ’08\, and now travels full-time as a family entertainer with Pockets Full of Fun. \nShe has received four Gold awards as well as first place in the Axtell Video Contest in ’13\, and has performed at various conferences sponsored by Creative Ministry Solutions. \n \nJim Schaap \n\nJames Calvin Schaap – Jim! – will read and tell stories at the third garden. Schaap has been writing all kinds of things for almost 40 years. This summer a collection of his newest stories will come out\, Up the Hill\, folk tales from the cemetery of a small Dutch town in northwest Iowa. “That’s all we’re saying\, really\,” said Schaap\, “but if you’ve never heard a story that features Calvinist zombies\, you will soon.” \nSchaap recently left Sioux Center after 37 years of teaching at Dordt College. A red playhouse/ storage shed sits at the edge of the shady property\, complementing the Pluim home. It’s an intimate setting. Ventriloquist Lisa Laird will do a program for adults\, but children will enjoy the show too! \nShay and Jackie Davis live on the northwest edge of town\, on a property that reminds them of their childhoods. Jackie grew up on a farm\, and Shay’s childhood home was like their Orange City home. “When I went out the front\, I was a city kid. The back\, a farm kid\,” he said. \nTheir front yard features perennials: day lily\, bleeding heart\, spiderwort\, sweet william\, columbine\, coral bells and a variety of hosta. In the back is a two-tired deck and a large yard with mature evergreen\, maple and cottonwood trees. Behind their tree border is a creek and cornfield\, and their own zipline.  \nTheir latest addition are homemade outdoor “lights\,” attached to the side of their home – created with the help of Mariah and Makenna\, with mason jars\, pebbles and candles. \nAuthor and storyteller Jim Schaap will entertain the audience at the Davis yard. \nThe third garden is Marilyn Mayberry’s\, a large yard filled with ash\, spruce\, locust\, amir maple\, pagoda dogwood and Japanese lilac.  Marilyn has planted 17 trees since moving to her home about 18 years ago. \nFritz Kroese was the artist of her backyard patio\, created last summer from a picture Marilyn found. There’s a two-sided pergola with Italian wedding lights\, stamped concrete and a water rock fountain. “This is the only water front I’m going to have\,” she said with a smile. \nMarilyn’s garden also features Siberian iris\, witch hazel\, key lime hydrangea\, and pachysandra. \nCellist Hannah McGarvey\, accompanied by Lori Vande Brake\, will perform at Marilyn’s place. \nRain location for Summer Suites is the Northwestern College DeWitt Theatre.

DESCRIPTION:ORANGE CITY – The Watoto Children’s Choir of Uganda will present their energetic music and dance show in Orange City Wednesday\, June 11 at Windmill Park. \nThe 7:00pm show features original and vibrant African music with dance routines and life-transforming stories. The program is entitled “Beautiful Africa: A New Generation.” \nThe show is part of the Orange City Arts Council’s Onstage Orange City summer series\, and is sponsored by  Orange City Communications. \nThe globally-acclaimed choir was born from the holistic care program\, Watoto\, initiated to serve a variety of needs of the African people\, especially those of children orphaned as a result of war\, poverty and HIV/AIDS. “We share a message of transformation\,” said Watoto founder Gary Skinner\, “telling the story of Africa’s rescued orphans and women.” \nEach of the children in the choir has suffered the loss of one or both parents\, and all live in Watoto Children’s Villages. \n“It’s a concert of hope\,” said Skinner\, and he and the choir desire to reach audiences “with the message of Christ’s healing power\,” he said. \nThis tour began in Argyle\, TX in mid-January and the 22  children and 10 adults will travel for six months\, visiting Texas\, New Mexico\, Oklahoma\, Missouri\, Louisiana\, Arkansas\, Illinois\, Kansas\, Wisconsin\, South Dakota\, Minnesota\, Nebraska\, and Iowa\, ending their tour in late June in Colorado. \nSince the tour’s inception in 1994\, 64 choirs have traveled globally\, providing the children with an opportunity to broaden their world view. They have done shows in Australia\, Brazil\, Canada\, China\, Europe\, Hong Kong\, Japan\, Germany\, France and the U.S.\, and have performed for everyone from royalty and national leaders to the ordinary person. \nThe June 11 concert is free\, but an offering will be received for Watoto. \nThanks to Living Water Community Church for assisting with the event. \nBring a blanket or lawn chairs. Onstage Orange City presents SongBlast on Wednesday\, June 4 in Orange City’s Windmill Park. The show begins at 7:00pm. \nThis free event\, part of the Onstage Orange City series\, is sponsored by OC Sanitation and Joe’s TV and Appliance. \nSongBlast’s Pat Balder of Maple Grove MN and Glen Everhart of Blaine came together just two years ago. \nBalder grew up in tiny Foley MN\, and taught himself to sing and play guitar\, piano and drums.  After earning a degree in music and classical guitar performance from St. John’s University\, he worked with Polygram Records\, wrote and produced music for Target\, Sun Country Airlines and Harley Davidson\, and has done thousands of shows in the Twin Cities\, New York\, Las Vegas\, Nashville\, and elsewhere. \nEverhart\, originally from St. Paul\, plays guitar\, piano and harmonica\, and earned a degree in vocal music at St. Cloud State. He has performed as a solo singer/ songwriter and comedian for years\, plus did a 10-year run with “Fyder & Everhart.” He’s done many shows for 3M\, a national tour for Super 8\, two CHS national conventions and performances at state fairs in six states. \nThe two brought their electric and acoustic guitars together at the suggestion of Gary Berg of G.L.Berg Entertainment\, meeting at Everhart’s home on May 17\, 2012.  For six and a half hours straight\, they played songs\, discussed pop music history\, told stories of the road\, and compared their approaches to entertaining\, writing\, business\, and family. \nThe two specialize in hilarious parodies\, and perform everything from classics to contemporary. \nAccording to an audience member\, “I just kept laughing all night!” Others said: “They can play anything that you’d ever want them to play!” “The most fun I’ve had in years.” “Spectacular!” \nOnstage Orange City is a program of the Orange City Arts Council. \nConcessions will be offered June 4. And O’Leary and his six-piece band later won a blues music award in Memphis. They’ll bring the blues to the Windmill Park stage in Orange City in July. \n\nThe series will feature 14 Wednesday nights of entertainment\, beginning with Orange City’s Got Talent! on May 28. It will be the fourth annual talent show\, open to talent Orange City and nearby towns. \n \nComic stunt juggler to be part of Onstage Orange CityTuey Wilson is fun\, funny and skillful. “Those looking for wholesome laughs and incredible demonstrations of skill have found their Holy Grail in Tuey\,” said Juggle Magazine. He will perform as one of the Onstage Orange City shows to be held May 28 through August 27. \n\nOnstage Orange City artists in June\, July and August include SongBlast from the Twin Cities\, classic rock group Exit 113 from Des Moines\, the Chris O’Leary blues band from New York\, and comic stunt juggler Tuey Wilson from Faribault\, MN.  Watoto Children’s Choir  will also present its lively show\, Beautiful Africa. \nMonroe Crossing\, from the Twin Cities\, is scheduled for August 13\, and is the only bluegrass band ever nominated as “Artist of the Year” by the Minnesota Music Academy. DESCRIPTION:  \nORANGE CITY – The Cashore Marionettes are not just for kids! Joseph Cashore has received national awards for creating puppet shows for all ages\, from children to adults. He will be presenting a show in Orange City Tuesday\, April 8 at 7:00 p.m. at Northwestern College’s Christ Chapel. Sponsor is the Orange City Arts Council. \n  \nCashore remembers seeing his first marionette at age 10 or 11; it was hanging from the ceiling of a gift shop. He stood and imagined the possibilities\, then worked up the courage to ask the saleswoman if he could try moving the marionette. She said ‘no.’ \n  \n \nCashore Marionettes: elephant \n\nThat didn’t stop Cashore. He eventually created a puppet that would convincingly “play” a violin solo – Ralph Vaughn Williams’ “The Lark Ascending.” He worked long and hard to solve the technical problems. As a result\, “the quality of manipulation is unparalleled\, and the effect upon the audience is powerful\,” said The Center of Contemporary Arts in St. Louis. \n  \nHis awards include a Pew Fellowship for Performance Art for artistic accomplishment and a Henson Foundation Grant which encourages puppetry to adult audiences. He received the highest honor possible for an American puppeteer\, a UNIMA Citation of Excellence…  “awarded to shows that touch their audiences deeply; that totally engage\, enchant and enthrall.” Joe and Wilma Cashore have toured across Europe and North America\, including the Kennedy Center\, and received accolades everywhere. \n  \n \nCashore Marionettes: mother & baby \n\nThe Toronto Sun said: “The range of movement truly has to be seen to be believed\, and even that might be pushing it!” \n  \nAccording to Baylin Artists\, Cashore Marionettes are “unmatched in artistry\, grace and refinement of movement. DESCRIPTION:SCHEDULE BELOW… SCROLL DOWN! \nORANGE CITY – The acclaimed Israeli ensemble\, Baladino\, will perform in Orange City and surrounding towns March 24-28. \n  \nIt’s part of a five-week tour\, sponsored by Arts Midwest and the Orange City Arts Council. Baladino’s residency will culminate in a public performance on Friday\, March 28 at 7:30pm at the Northwestern College Chapel in Orange City. \n  \nBaladino gathers its music from traditional melodies\, carried to Israel by the Jewish people who were expelled from Spain and Portugal in 1492. The Jews lived in Eastern Europe\, Africa and the Middle East – everywhere from Yemen\, Iraq and Morocco to Hungary\, Germany\, Turkey and Greece. So Israel is a melting pot\, with “a collision of cultures\,” said Yonnie Dror of Baladino. \n  \nSo their music is eclectic too. \n  \nThe members of Baladino\, from Tel Aviv\, begin with old melodies – some 500 years old – then add jazz\, rock and classical influences. They perform with both ancient and new instruments: soprano saxophone\, flute\, percussion\, violin\, mandolin\, vocals\, duduk\, ney\, ram’s horn and more. The duduk is the great grandfather of the oboe and bassoon\, and sounds like a weeping man\, said Dror. These days\, it’s used in Hollywood in dramatic scenes from ancient times: in movies like Gladiator\, Blood Diamond and The Lion\, the Witch & the Wardrobe. \n  \nThe ram’s horn\, or shofar\, was used in the battle of Jericho\, and is also used as a climax of prayer. The Jewish people believe that the sound of the shofar “opens up the gates of heaven\, so God listens to the prayers\,” said Dror. \n  \nDror\, leader of the ensemble\, plays 30 wind instruments. Yael Badash of Baladino has received awards for her vocals and her work in Ladino music. Baladino was honored last fall with invitations to perform at the Chicago and Madison world music festivals. \n  \nGeneral admission tickets for the public concert on Friday\, March 28 at 7:30pm at Northwestern’s Christ Chapel may be purchased at Dove Bookstore and at the door\, at $10 adults and $7 students. DESCRIPTION:SCHEDULE BELOW… SCROLL DOWN! \n  \nORANGE CITY – The acclaimed Israeli ensemble\, Baladino\, will perform in Orange City and surrounding towns March 24-28. \n  \nIt’s part of a five-week tour\, sponsored by Arts Midwest and the Orange City Arts Council. Baladino’s residency will culminate in a public performance on Friday\, March 28 at 7:30pm at the Northwestern College Chapel in Orange City. \n  \nBaladino gathers its music from traditional melodies\, carried to Israel by the Jewish people who were expelled from Spain and Portugal in 1492. The Jews lived in Eastern Europe\, Africa and the Middle East – everywhere from Yemen\, Iraq and Morocco to Hungary\, Germany\, Turkey and Greece. So Israel is a melting pot\, with “a collision of cultures\,” said Yonnie Dror of Baladino. \n  \nSo their music is eclectic too. \n  \nThe members of Baladino\, from Tel Aviv\, begin with old melodies – some 500 years old – then add jazz\, rock and classical influences. They perform with both ancient and new instruments: soprano saxophone\, flute\, percussion\, violin\, mandolin\, vocals\, duduk\, ney\, ram’s horn and more. The duduk is the great grandfather of the oboe and bassoon\, and sounds like a weeping man\, said Dror. These days\, it’s used in Hollywood in dramatic scenes from ancient times: in movies like Gladiator\, Blood Diamond and The Lion\, the Witch & the Wardrobe. \n  \nThe ram’s horn\, or shofar\, was used in the battle of Jericho\, and is also used as a climax of prayer. The Jewish people believe that the sound of the shofar “opens up the gates of heaven\, so God listens to the prayers\,” said Dror. \n  \nDror\, leader of the ensemble\, plays 30 wind instruments. Yael Badash of Baladino has received awards for her vocals and her work in Ladino music. Baladino was honored last fall with invitations to perform at the Chicago and Madison world music festivals. \n  \nGeneral admission tickets for the public concert on Friday\, March 28 at 7:30pm at Northwestern’s Christ Chapel may be purchased at Dove Bookstore and at the door\, at $10 adults and $7 students. Learners of all ages will discover and explore art principles by creating meaningful art projects. \n  \nJudy’s own art interprets the people and places of the Great Plains.
