Northwestern College’s A cappella Choir will present its tour concert on Friday, April 16, at 7:30 p.m. in Christ Chapel. The concert is free; the public is invited to attend.
The concert follows the ensemble’s tour, April 8–11, which will include performances in churches and schools in northwest Iowa and Sioux Falls.
The choir’s touring program includes much variety in subject, language and style. The opening sacred package focuses on God’s presence in the deepest challenges of our earthly journey, including settings of “It is Well With My Soul” and “Praise to the Lord.” The middle section features several virtuosic settings of works without text, such as Rossini’s “William Tell Overture” and “Dawn and Dusk,” a song featuring the sounds and energy of forest life. The final section will include a couple settings of Taiwanese music, some spirituals, and will close with the choir’s traditional “Beautiful Savior.” Several songs will feature solos by choir members.
In order to prioritize the safety of the musicians and the audience members, masks will be required for the event. Physical distancing will be encouraged as families will be seated together in groups no larger than three persons.
The A cappella Choir is directed by Dr. Thomas Holm, professor of music at Northwestern, and accompanied on piano by Nora Verburg. The ensemble has performed across the U.S. and abroad. It was recently featured in a presentation Holm gave about Taiwanese music as part of the American Choral Directors Association’s virtual national conference.
