ORANGE CITY – Fifteen regional artists, and a guest Spanish artist, were featured in the Orange City Arts Council’s exhibit Feb. 14-22 at the DeWitt Theatre Arts Center at Northwestern College. A reception with the artists was held Sat., Feb. 22 from 6:00 to 7:00pm.
The juried exhibit, Artists’ Showcase: Orange CIty Arts Council’s Regional Exhibition, was held in conjunction with the Northwestern College musical, Man of La Mancha. Artworks were related to the themes in de Cervantes’ tale of Don Quixote: from madness and idealism to the fine line between illusion and reality.
Artists featured in the exhibit were Joanne Alberda, Brenda Schoenherr-Thelen, Vanessa Reusch, Becca (Lokker) Ortner, Judy Thompson, Bob Huibregtse, David Versluis, Timothy J. Arand-McIlrath, Brian J. Damon, Glenda Drennen, Kali Wolkow, Katlyn Loeschen, Lyric Morris, David Lammers, and Kayla Vetter. They are from McCook Lake, SD, Sioux City, Storm Lake, Okoboji, Le Mars, Sioux Center and Orange City.
Media included batik, acrylic, oil, watercolor, aqua media, chalk pastel, ink, crocheted yarn, graphite, colored pencil, hot glue, textile, wire, steel, and wood.
The “best of show” award was presented to Vanessa Reusch (left) for Day and Night. Honorable mentions went to Glenda Drennen (right) for Rue Rutabaga #12 and Katlyn Loeschen (center) for Circus. They received cash prizes.
Jurors for the exhibit were Rein and Margo Vanderhill, artists from Alton.
Guest artist was Lambarri, a Spaniard whose parents fled their home country during the Spanish Civil War. Lambarri was born in Mexico City, later moving to Spain to study art. He now lives in Florida. His works, Don Quixote I, II and III, are acrylic and ink on paper canvas.
