Nobuntu, the female a cappella quintet from Zimbabwe, has drawn international acclaim for inventive performances that range from traditional Zimbabwean songs to Afro Jazz to Gospel. The ensemble’s concerts are performed with pure voices, augmented by minimalistic percussion, traditional instruments such as the Mbira (thumb piano) and organic, authentic dance movements.
The word Nobuntu is an African concept that values humility, love, unity and family from a woman’s perspective. The ensemble represents a new generation of young African women singers who celebrate and preserve their culture, beauty, and heritage through art. The ensemble’s mission is the belief that music can be an important vehicle for change, one that transcends racial, tribal, religious, gender, and economic boundaries.

Nobuntu’s visit to Orange City is made possible through a partnership with Northwestern College and Iowa Arts Council. Nobuntu will also be leading a music workshop with survivors of domestic violence through a partnership with Family Crisis Centers of Sioux Center. Orange City Arts takes a stand against domestic violence during Domestic Violence Awareness Month this October, and will be sharing information about this important issue in our community as well as ways to prevent it during the evening’s concert.
Special thanks to our partners, Northwestern College and Iowa Arts Council for making this amazing event possible.
