Paulo Padilha & Group from Brazil: Oct 5-10

ORANGE CITY – Catch the swing and rhythm of urban Brazil! Paulo Padilha and Group, from Sao Paulo, will spend a week in the Orange City area October 5-10, conducting workshops and performing. The public concert is Friday, Oct. 10 at 7:30pm at the Unity Christian Knight Center.

The Orange City Arts Council’s 2014-15 Beyond Onstage series begins will Paulo Padilha. Padilha and his band are part of a series of international music ensembles coming to Orange City, from Brazil, China, Quebec and Israel.

Highly acclaimed as a musician and clever lyricist with a mischievous sense of humor, Padilha’s songs take interest in everything from mother-in-law as his inspiring muse to philosophic ramblings on the function of art.

Padilha – singer, composer, instrumentalist and writer (second from left) –  performs with his ensemble: Léo Mendes, guitar, electric bass & vocals (left);  Dani Zulu and Samba Sam (right), percussion & vocals; and André Magalhães (not pictured), sound engineer, percussion & vocals.

Tickets for the public concert on Friday, Oct. 10 may be purchased at Orange City Arts Council or Dove Bookstore, at $10 adults and $7 students. Children age five and under are free. Season passes for the five Beyond Onstage shows are $35, adults; $20, students, until Oct. 1.

Padilha and Group will also do coffee house shows Monday, Oct. 6 at Fruited Plain Cafe in Sioux Center at 8pm, and Wednesday, Oct. 8 at Old Factory Coffee Shop in Orange City at 7:30pm. There will be a $2 cover charge for each show. Brazilian cuisine will be available for sale at Old Factory.

The ensemble will also do several school assemblies and workshops.

Diamond Vogel Paint is sponsoring the residency of Padilha and Group in the Orange City area.

Through the Orange City Arts Council, Orange City was selected as the one city in Iowa to host the 2013-2015 Arts Midwest World Fest.  A program of Arts Midwest, this Arts Midwest World Fest season is generously supported by the National Endowment for the Arts, 3M Foundation, BNSF Railway, the Ministry of Culture of the People’s Republic of China, the Chinese Heritage Foundation Grants Fund of The Minneapolis Foundation, and the Iowa Arts Council.

Wednesday, Oct. 8: 10:45am: short performance at Trinity Reformed Church Knitting Circle

Late morning: follow-up workshop with 7th and 8th graders at Orange City Christian School

7:30pm: Public performance at Old Factory Coffee Shop, Orange City $2 cover (+authentic Brazilian food for sale. Come early!)

Thursday, Oct. 9: 11am performance for Northwestern College campus community, at choir room (east end of Chapel/ Music building)

Afternoon assembly for students from OCCS, Ireton Christian, Boyden-Hull and Home Educators at Unity Christian Knight Center

Friday, Oct. 10: Afternoon assembly for students from Unity High and Home Educators at Unity Christian Knight Center

7:30pm: Public concert at Unity Christian Knight Center. $10 adult, $7 student, age 5 & under free.
