Northwestern choir to tour, present home concert

Northwestern College’s A cappella Choir will embark on a concert tour in South Dakota and Nebraska April 3-6. The tour will include concerts at three South Dakota high schools as well as churches in Sioux Falls, Mitchell, and a suburb of Omaha, Nebraska.

Following the tour, the A cappella Choir will perform a home concert in Christ Chapel on Friday, April 11, at 7:30 p.m. The event is free and open to the public.

Tour repertoire will feature settings of sacred hymns such as “It Is Well With My Soul” by Taiwanese arranger Yu-Shan Tsai. Other highlights include Eric Whitacre’s tender “Seal Lullaby,” Jake Runestad’s percussive “Nyon, Nyon,” and James Erb’s rich setting of the American folk favorite “Shenandoah.” The choir will also perform “Baba Yetu,” Christopher Tin’s well-known setting of the Lord’s Prayer in Swahili, along with Mark Hayes’ arrangement of the spiritual “Here’s One” for choir, piano and soprano saxophone.

“The singers are prepared and eager to share a program that includes a wide variety of styles and languages,” says Dr. Thomas Holm, choral director and professor of music. “The audience will enjoy a compelling journey and will leave feeling refreshed, encouraged and entertained.”

The 36-member ensemble is accompanied by Nora Verburg. The choir has performed across the U.S. and made international tours to destinations such as the Czech Republic, Austria, Poland, Taiwan, Denmark and Sweden.
