Artwork by Nebraska artist Susan Moore will be displayed in Northwestern College’s Te Paske Gallery Oct. 23 through Dec. 13.
“Sugar Coated” features hyper-realistic oil paintings that provide stunning portraits of food. A public reception with the artist is scheduled for Thursday, Nov. 7, at 5 p.m.
Moore says her goal is to remind gallery visitors of their experiences associated with eating. “I present the sensations of indulgence and luxury that one has while savoring these decadent delights,” she explains. “My intent is to make the sensations linger and to unravel the flavors and textures for the viewer.”
Moore researches her subjects and constructs specific compositions, at times working with other food artists. Her subjects are in sharp focus, while other elements of the painting become almost abstract, and she elevates both saturation and contrast to create more “flavors” and intensity.
An Iowa native, Moore earned a bachelor’s degree in fine arts from Iowa State University and a Master of Fine Arts degree from the University of North Texas. Her work has been showcased and won awards through the United States and abroad through art partnerships, solo and group exhibitions, juried competitions, and nonprofit and community events. Her most recent shows took place at the Sanford Art Museum and Planetarium in Cherokee, Iowa; the Greenfield Opera House in Missouri; and the Stalder Art Gallery in Falls City, Nebraska. She serves as a judge and juror for art fairs and shows, as well as on various committees and artist panels in Nebraska.
Moore lives in Nebraska City and is an associate professor of art at Peru State College, where she also directs the Peru State College Gallery.
Northwestern’s Te Paske Gallery is located in the Korver Visual Arts Center, on Highway 10 at 214 8th Street SW in Orange City. Gallery hours are 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Mondays through Fridays and 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturdays.
