Orange City Public Library‘s summer reading program, “A Universe of Stories” was a whirlwind of activity with over 60 programs taking place within a six week time frame. There were events for the entire family, including performer and movie nights. Babygarten, story times, and fun shops were held. Teen and adult programs, as well as a community puzzle, a mural, a food-for-fines program, and a writing competition were also part of the program.
In 2018, 947 people participated in the summer reading program. This year, in 2019, 1,057 people participated in the summer program, a 10 percent increase, and likely a record year for the library’s summer reading program.
During one fun shop, lava lamps were created and an exploding experiment took place. One boy yelled out, “As long as I live, this is the best day ever!”
A teen lock-in was held and had 25 participants, which marks the library’s largest lock-in to date. The lock-in included nerf gun wars in the library–a high interest and much-enjoyed activity! Eating pizza and playing “Sardines” were also highlights of the lock-in.
The library also offered its first glass etching class, and it was a rousing success. For adults, crafting programs tend to be the most attended programs.
The library staff lowered the volunteer age to include those who had finished 5th grade this year, and 5th-12th graders were encouraged to volunteer with the summer reading program. The library had the best response ever this year for volunteering, and the volunteers were extremely helpful at the “Space Station” (where people turned in minutes and earned prizes).
The Orange City Public Library patrons greatly enjoyed this summer reading program and on the whole, participated in greater numbers. For the library staff, it was a joy to serve the community in this way.
