MAURICE/ ORANGE CITY – The Flying Pans Steel Band from Central College will perform at Maurice Reformed Church Sunday, March 10 at 7:00 pm. A workshop will be held for the public from 5:30 to 6:30, prior to the concert.
The events are sponsored by the Orange City Arts Council, in conjunction with Maurice Reformed Church.
The Flying Pans Steel Band, from Pella, was founded and is directed by Stanley E. Dahl of the Central College music department. The steel pan drums, which originated in Trinidad and Tobago, will be played by the 28 band members – music majors and non-music majors, most of whom hadn’t played steel pans before coming to Central.
Flying Pans has traveled extensively throughout the Midwest, presenting concerts, workshops and clinics. They have performed for the Iowa Days of Percussion, Iowa Music Educators, Iowa Bandmasters Association, International Association of Pan, Percussive Arts Society International Convention and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
They have worked with Chris Wabich, Liam Teague + Robert Chappell, Ken “Professor” Philmore and Andy Narell.
The Flying Pans perform diverse styles, from traditional calypso, soca and reggae to Latin, disco, techno, and rock and roll to hymns.
People of all ages are welcome to come early for the workshop, 5:30-6:30 pm, for hands-on experience with the steel pans. The concert begins at 7 pm. There is no charge to attend, but an offering will be received to assist with expenses.
Maurice Reformed Church is located at 410 Main Street in Maurice.
Flying Pans will be working with students at MOC-FV Elementary in Orange City Monday morning, March 11, prior to continuing their spring trip to Vermillion SD, Cheyenne WY, Morrison CO, Denver CO and Council Bluffs IA.
