Northwestern band to present touring concert March 17

The Northwestern College Symphonic Band will perform its touring concert Friday, March 17, at 7:30 p.m. in Christ Chapel. The event is free and open to the public.

The band’s spring tour program features selections inspired by Luke 24:30-35, a biblical passage where Jesus’ disciples feel their hearts “burning” while in the presence of the resurrected Christ. Randal Standridge’s “Fiat Lux”—meaning “let there be light”—is a vibrant melody that calls to mind Jesus as “the light of the world,” while “Phoenix Rekindled” by Grace Baugher offers a moment of rest and encouragement to those who are struggling.

Their repertoire also includes Morton Gould’s “Santa Fe Saga”—a four-section piece that represents the cultural influences of New Mexico—and a setting of “Amazing Grace” by Frank Ticheli, performed in honor of the original composition’s 250th anniversary.

“Northwestern’s Symphonic Band is excited to share the love of Christ through the vehicle of music,” says director and associate professor of music Dr. Angela Holt. “We pray God’s light would be manifested to all throughout this tour and home concert.”

The 50-member ensemble will tour March 4–12, performing at schools on the Rehoboth and Zuni reservations in New Mexico, as well as performing arts venues and senior living facilities in Colorado, Kansas and Nebraska. For more information, visit nwciowa.edu/band-tour.
