In all, Iowa’s hospitals provided 137,841 jobs statewide
DES MOINES – Last year, Orange City Area Health System generated 1,147 jobs that added $105 million to the area’s economy, according to the latest study by the Iowa Hospital Association.
“Once again, we are reminded of the significant economic impact provided by our health system,” commented Marty Guthmiller, CEO of Orange City Area Health System. “While we will never lose focus on our core mission of serving the region’s health and wellness needs, we are cognizant of our responsibilities and contributions to our local economies.”
“The economic impact from Orange City Area Health System is profound,” stated Ryan McEwen, Director of Economic Development for the City of Orange City, “not only in the over 1,100 high-value jobs created in our community, and over $100 million in total expenditures, but also in the significant strategic role they play for our economy.”
“OCAHS is critical for our economic development, without which Orange City would not be the same,” McEwen added. “We’re thankful for the excellent care they provide for our community members as well as for the long-term economic vision they provide.”
The study was compiled from hospital-submitted data to the American Hospital Association’s annual survey of hospitals. The study found that Iowa hospitals employed 137,841 people in 2023. As an income source, hospitals provided over $9 billion in wages. Hospital expenses accounted for over $21.3 billion of the state’s gross domestic product.
“Iowa’s hospitals and health systems implemented the programs and services accounted for in this study in response to their communities’ needs,” IHA President and CEO Chris Mitchell said. “Many of these programs and services wouldn’t exist without hospital support and leadership. With IHA’s advocacy, these efforts help ensure the financial stability of hospitals, making it possible for them to provide the services and programs most needed by the people they serve.”
The Iowa Hospital Association is a voluntary membership organization representing the interests of hospitals and health systems to business, government, and consumer audiences.
