Valentine‘s Day concert to focus on God’s love

God’s love will be the focus of the Northwestern College Symphonic Band concert on Friday, Feb. 14, at 7:30 p.m. in Christ Chapel. “For God So Loved …” is free and open to the public.

“The concert is centered around our Heavenly Father’s love and how he also demonstrated that through his son, Jesus Christ,” says Dr. Angela Holt, Northwestern’s director of instrumental studies and music education. “A variety of pieces on the program will exemplify the amazing love of God and the love we should have for one another. It will be a lovely concert to enjoy on Valentine’s Day.”

The concert provides music that recognizes deep friendships, such as the piece titled “Trauermusik” by Richard Wagner, a German composer from the Romantic period primarily known for his operas. Wagner created this funeral march for his friend Carl Maria von Weber, using material from Weber’s opera “Euryanthe.”

Among other works, the Symphonic Band will also perform David Maslanka’s “Give Us This Day,” a very dramatic setting inspired by “The Lord’s Prayer,” and “How Deep the Father’s Love for Us,” composed by Anthony LaBounty.
