Northwestern College’s Drama Ministries Ensemble (DME) will travel internationally during spring break, March 1–7, performing and leading workshops in the Netherlands and Germany.
While abroad, the eight-member theatre company will partner with Reformed Church in America missionaries and local congregations in Apeldoorn, Netherlands, and Hannover, Germany. In both cities, the ensemble will present a performance based on Scripture and lead workshops on Scripture memorization. In Apeldoorn, students will also meet with families interested in incorporating theatre into homeschool education, while in Hannover they will perform at a local school and spend time with congregants from partnering churches.
The tour’s theme, “A Vital Church Grows,” is drawn from Acts 2 through 6 and centers on the story of the early church. “We are telling the story of the early church,” says theatre professor Molly Wiebe Faber, the DME’s director. “We see the people in this story find power in the Holy Spirit and faithfully testify about their faith in both words and actions.”
The production emphasizes ensemble storytelling, with students portraying multiple characters and moments from the biblical narrative. While on tour, the group will also collaborate with host churches to complete hand-crafted tapestries designed for each church’s pulpit.
Following their return to campus, the Drama Ministries Ensemble will present home showcase performances for the public. Shows will take place Saturday, March 28, at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, March 29, at 2 p.m. in the Allen Black Box Theatre in the DeWitt Theatre Arts Center. Both performances are free and open to the public.
